MALIN KUNDANG
( FOLKTALES FROM WEST SUMATERA )
Along time ago, there was a widow who lived with her son, Malin Kundang. He loved his mather and was very loyal to her.MalinKundang wanted to do something to make his mother happy. One day, Malin Kundang asked his mother’s permission to leave.” Mother, please let me go and find work, to make our lives better”. “Honestly my son, I do not want to be separated from you.I will pray for you succes. If your succesful, please remember your mother”.”Mother, please don’t be sad. I will return ! Look after father’s house”.
Dahulu kala, hiduplah sorang janda dengan seorang anak lelakinya bernama Malin Kundang.Ia anak yang berbakti.Malin Kundang ingin berbuat sesuatu agar kelak dapat membahagiakan ibunya.Suatu hari Malin Kundang berpamitan, “ Ibu, izinkanlah aku merantau.agar hidup kita lebih baik”.Anakku, ibu sebenarnya tidak ingin berpisah denganmu.Ibu berdoa semoga berhasil. Jagalah peninggalan ayah”.
Malin Kundang went out into the world to make his fortune.Over the years, he worked hard.He saved his money. He worked diligently, striving to save enough money to become a merchant. He started out in a very humble manner, but over time he grew rich. All the while he kept his pleasant disposition and his friends were very happy with him.But none of them knew his origins.Malin Kundang would only say his homeland was Padang.
Demikianlah, Malin Kundang merantau ke negeri seberang.Bertahun-tahun Malin Kundang bekerja dengan ulet.Sedikit demi sedikit jerih payahnya dikumpulkan.
There was one merchant, who was respected over all.His name was Sannga Warman.Malin Kundang respected him too. This merchant had many shops and business, and was very rich.Sangga Warman was also well known for haping a very beatiful daughter. The young merchants vied among themselves to win her hand. When Sangga Warman chose Malin Kundang to be his son-in-law Malin Kundang was very surprised ! How proud Malin Kundang was ! He was especially happy that putri Jamillah ( Sangga Warman’s daughter ) had been interested in him for a long time.
After their wedding, Sangga Warman gave his permission for Malin Kundang to take his wife to visit Padang. When they arrived at a Sweetwater Beach, Padang. All the fishermen in the village gathered around Malin Kundang’s boat. You seeit was a very poor, humble village, and merchants did not come there ofthen. The villagers were not skilled farmers and did not produce enough surplus crops or fish to trade. They only produced enough to eat.So it was a rare event to see a merchant’s boat land on their beach!.
Penduduk disana, kurang cakap mengelolah kekayaan alam.Mereka mencari ikan hanya untuk makan.Jadi jarang sekali kapal para saudagar menepi dipantai itu.
When Malin Kundang landed on his native soil, his heart fluttered with exicement and nervousness. It had been twenty years since he left, and this was and this was the first time he had returned. But little in the fishing village.Maybe some of his friends would have married and built their own houses by now,”And where is mother now?”he whispered to himself. When he left, Malin’s mother had been living in his father’s house.Trough simply built, the house was large enough and in good enough and in good condition. He tried on think of his mother’s face.It had been beatifu. There was no need to be ashamed to intoduce her to hs new wife.
Ketika Malin Kundang menginjak tanah asalnya, hatinya berdebar-debar.Sudah hampir 20 tahun ia menembara.Baru kali ini ia kembali.Tidak banyak yang berubah diperkampungan nelayan itu.Hanya bertambah banyak.
An old beggar pushed through the crowd around Malin Kundang’s boat. She tried to climb into the boat. She smelled so bad that the crewmen tried to shove her off and chase her away. But she was very determined.Clad in rags and tatters, she aproached Malin Kundang.”My son, my son, you’ve finally come home!I’ve been looking for you for years. I sold the house and property to be ablle to go and search for you, but in vain! Finnnally, I came back to this village because I remembered that you said that you would return one day.I’ve missed you so much!”.
Seorang pengemis tua, menerobos kerumunan orang di sekitar perahu Malin Kundang.Ia berusaha naik keatas kapal. Ibu rindu sekali”
Malin Kundang was ashamed and embarrased. His wife and all his servants were listening. He did not want to lose face.He didn’t want hi wife to think he was the don of beggar.Angrily he replied,”Hey, old beggar ! It’s very brave of you to pretend to be my mother.Don’t you know that my mother is neat and beatiful ? she is not a smelly old beggar like you. It’s in possible thatyou could be a rich merchant’s mother”.
Betapa malunya Malin Kundang. Mana mungkin seorang saudagar kaya mempunyai seorang ibu pengemis.
But I really am your mother ! See that scar on your forehead ? You got that scar when you were caught in your father’s net.Malin, I Look like this because I have been searching for you so hard that I have not had time to look after myself. I could not work, so I was forced to beg tp get enough to eat.Look into my eyes, my son, I am your mother”.It’s useless to continue pretending that you are my mother ! Get away from my boat. And don’t give my servants your nasty diseases, either. The rest of you,(addressing the crew), throw this beggar off the boat.We will leave directly.
Tetapi aku benar-benar ibumu.Aku melihat bekas luka dikeningmu.
With great repugnance,Malin Kundang’s servant dragged the old woman off the boat. Then they left the beach.Malin Kundang’s Mother eried very hard. Her heart was broken. As the boat began to pull away from the shore, she lifted up her hands anad prayed to the God”Oh God, please give me justice ! Bring disaster on my son so he will come back to me fprever.
Ibu Malin Kundang menangis keras sekali, Ia sangat sakit hati.Kapal Malin Kundang sudah bergerak meninggalkan pantai, “Duhai sang pencipta, berikanlah keadilan.Timpahkanlah musibah kepada anakku.Aku ingin ia kembali kepadaku untuk selamanya”.
As the finished her prayer, a big storm blew up.Malin Kundang’s ship was caught by a huge wave and the thrown up onto the beach.Malin Kundang was cast right out of the broken boat.As he saw his hand turn to stone, re realized his mistake. He tried to crawl towards his mother on his hand and kness. But before he could kiss her feet in respetance, he turned to stone !

Malin Kundang
Ketika doa setelah selesai diucapkan.Badai datng sekonyong-konyong.Kapal Malin Kundang oleng kesana kemari.Ombak menghanyunkan kapalnya dahsyat sekali. Malin Kundang menyadari kesalahannya.Ia berusaha merangkak mencari ibunya.Namun sayang usahanya sia-sia.Sebelum dia sempat mencium kaki ibunya untuk memohon ampun, tubuhnya sudah berubah seluruhnya menjadi batu”.
